VW Campervan + Kielder + an iPad = experimental digital storytelling!

I’m starting a new project with an organisation called Flo-Culture based in the North East of England.  Flo-culture designs and innovates approaches to research, evaluation and practice development in arts and cultural engagement.  They have recently been successful in gaining funding from NIACE to run an innovative new project called “memory box’.  The project will engage older learners to learn new IT skills using iPad technology.  As part of the project they have asked me to facilitate some digital storytelling workshops with older learners using iPads.  The digital stories produced will then provide the content for a new app that will be produced called “memory box” which can be used by a wider audience.

I am really excited about taking part in this project and I’m looking forward to putting intopractice some of the things that I learned in the iPhone/iPad workshop I attended in London with Joe Lambert from the Center for Digital Storytelling.

So one way I’m preparing for the “Memory Box” project is by practically making some digital stories myself again on the iPad.

I took our recent anniversary trip away To Kielder water in a VW Campervan as an opportunity to experiment!  We hired a VW Campervan called Gracie from a company called Camperscape based in Tynemouth in North East and had a great couple of days away!

All of the photos used in my digital story were taken on the iPad and I then used a photo app on the iPad to add some effects to some of the photos.  I then used the iMovie app on the iPad  to build my story.

I was really impressed firstly with the quality of the camera on the iPad and the photos that it took.  Secondly, I was really impressed with what is possible with some of the photo editing apps that are available for the iPad, and thirdly I was really impressed with the quality of the finished digital story.

I hope you like the finished story and I will be writing another blog post once the Memory Box project starts next month.
